IB Lit and Lang Blog 7: Life is but a Netflix queue...
In Macbeth, Banquo has been the one character who has remained relatively the same through out the play. Banquo remained to believe in what's right, and saw through Macbeth's lies once he became king. Similarly, when the witches gave both him and Macbeth their prophecies, they didn't phase Banquo like it did to Macbeth. He saw through the witches' evil lies and didn't let them control him. But he still ended up dying for it. Macbeth betrayed him, but he still stayed true to himself in his dying moments. He made sure the murderers didn't hurt his son, he made sure Fleance knew to escape. Therefore, Banquo would recommend shows and movies that watch as the villains fail; shows and movies that watch the antagonist fall from grace and get what's coming to them.
The first show that Banquo would recommend is Daredevil. In the show, it follows a blind lawyer with heightened senses as he takes down a criminal mob boss and kingpin. Throughout the show, the Kingpin constantly eludes Daredevil and the law, making it harder for justice to find him. Banquo would recommend this show because, much like Macbeth, the Kingpin believes he is above the law. He believes that he is what the city needs and that he is taking what is rightfully his. Similarly with Macbeth, he is not afraid to kill who he believes has betrayed him. Also, he hides behind a mask in the public's eye. The appearance he has set up for himself is that he is a great man who would do anything to see New York prosper, but the reality of it is that he is making the city much worse.
Another recommendation is The Interview. While it's no longer on Netflix anymore, it used to be. It is about two men who are on a talk show which is a favorite of Kim Jong-un's. They convince North Korea's leader to let them host a show with Kim Jong-un as the guest, and on the adventure they are asked to assassinate the leader. They struggle to decide what to do while, unbeknownst to them, being lied to by the leader that he is a great benefit to the country. Banquo would recommend this movie because it essentially ends with the talk show people killing the unjust leader for the rebels. In the movie, Kim Jong-un is a huge burden on the country, which is similar to Macbeth.
The third recommendation is Stranger Things. Stranger Things is about this kid going missing and his friends searching for him while another mysterious girl with powers shows up and ends up helping them. This girl was given her powers by this evil corporation who just so happens to be related to the kid's disappearance. Banquo would recommend this show because it shows how the kids put an end to this corrupt corporation as they try and free their friend from the dimension that was discovered by that same evil corporation. The corporation is ruining the lives of the people who live in the same town, as well as the girl with the powers. Macbeth is similar to the corporation because of his desire for power. He did anything to obtain it, including killing the former king, which relates to the corporation because of the lengths they go to to keep everything under wraps.
The fourth recommendation is The Ridiculous 6. The Ridiculous 6 is a movie about how these 6 half brothers find each other in the wake of their long lost and shared father getting kidnapped. They must work together to get $100,000 in any way possible to free their father, but [DISCLAIMER: SPOILERS] end up finding out that it was all a trick and their father was the mastermind of the whole ordeal. Banquo would recommend this movie because, in the end, the brothers put a stop to their evil father. The person who was controlling them the whole movie was finally put to a stop by the protagonists. Meanwhile, the corrupt Macbeth was finally put to an end by Macduff, who ends up saving the country.
The fifth and last recommendation is Black Panther. Black Panther is about a prince of the richest country in the world, who remains a secret from the world, as he earns the throne, then has it stripped away from his cousin who had been abandoned by the late king because his brother betrayed his people. It is about the prince and his struggle to fix his father's past mistake as he also has to take the throne back from his cousin who has been completely taken over by anger that the previous king has caused. Banquo would recommend this movie because this movie has similar plot points to Macbeth. A king is killed by a corrupt man who then becomes king, only to have it taken away from them while their throne goes to someone more worthy. The kingship was taken away from the previous king forcefully as the new king takes their power for granted and kills a lot more people on his rise to the leader of the world. When he falls from grace, it is similar to how Macbeth falls from grace. Only one person could take him down, and it came from an unlikely hero (because in Black Panther, the corrupt king believed to have killed him).

ReplyDeleteI liked how you mentioned that Macbeth was blinded by his own power, as he saw his actions as being beneficial to Scotland as a whole. This was also seen in some of the characters in Black Panther and The Interview. You also made sure to link the movies back to the themes of the play such as appearance vs reality, the fall from grace, and ambition. Overall it was a solid and straightforward list.
